This Week In Roleplaying – January 9th, 2015

Here are links for pen and paper roleplaying games, board games, card games, and everything that goes with these games that we found interesting on the week of January 9th, 2015.

The theme for this week was sci-fi gaming. I looked for tips and resources that could help you in preparing a sci-fi game session or campaign. I have posted two of these links before, but thought they were good enough that I’d list them here again for those working on a sci-fi game. Enjoy!

5 Tips For Sci-Fi Campaign Preparation (Roleplaying Tips) Five great tips on sci-fi campaign preparation by Jonathan Hicks via a guest post on Roleplaying Tips. A lot of the ideas apply to any setting, but he does relate them specifically to aiding a GM that might be new to the sci-fi genre.

Running A Sci-Fi Game Setting: 8 Tips For New Sci-Fi GMs (Farsight Blogger) This is also an older post plucked from a veteran website. It actually is titled eight tips, but in reality I counted nine overall tips that he discusses. I liked how he touches on the different sci-fi genres too, and how hard science fiction, space opera, and science fantasy differ.

Sci-Fi Story Idea Generator (Sci-Fi Ideas) This is a very simple generator that can be refreshed to provide two sci-fi story ideas. Not incredibly useful in itself, but you’ll find other good resources on this site for various science fiction ideas.

donjon This is my go-to random generator site for all kinds of things for my roleplaying games. In regards to science fiction, it has several different generators. It even has generators for specific sci-fi games, like Star Wars D20, Star Wars D6, and Traveller. It also has numerous other general random generators that could be used for any game type, including sci-fi.

Seventh Sanctum This is my other go-to random generator site. Seventh Sanctum has a ton of random generators that are extremely unusual that you won’t see on other random generator sites. Hell, I think they even have a random generator random generator (it randomly sends you to a random generator that randomly provides you something).

We browse many roleplaying websites, articles, and social media connections each week. If you’d like to be listed on here, please contact use via our Contact page!

About Samuel Van Der Wall

Sam has been roleplaying since he first encountered Battletech 1st Edition. It was initially the tactical play that drew him in, but eventually he expanded into the roleplaying game portion and it was a done deal from there. His favorite game is Shadowrun, but hes also a huge fan of Dungeons & Dragons, Dungeon World, Numenera, Star Wars, Warhammer, and many other roleplaying games. Hes a huge fan of Fantasy Flight Games and numerous other gaming companies and publishers. He prefers playing over game mastering. He likes creating one character, building on that character, integrating it into the story, and seeing how it develops over a campaign. Hes not afraid of character death because its often memorable and builds the story! If he had a specialty, it would be that hes really into helping other players draw out storylines in their own characters and further their own goals. Hes never had the privilege of attending a gaming related convention, but hopes to attend two next year.
